For the June edition of The Aussential Mix, Electronic Music Australia welcomed Melbourne-based producer Okayden to the show for a genre-blurring set that landed just in time for the winter solstice weekend.

Before producing, Okayden was composing music for theatre, but during the lockdowns, he began creating for himself. That shift sparked what’s now been five years of experimentation, growth, and finding his unique sound.

Rooted in house but far from confined by it, Okayden’s music pulls from classical, techno, rap, and lo-fi influences. The result is a style that’s quirky, layered, and constantly evolving. He credits artists like Alison Wonderland, Damon Albarn, and Nnamdï as key influences, and shouts out bbno$ for inspiring his lighthearted and fun approach to creating.

One non-negotiable in his process? His Bose headphones. “My last two album cycles have all started with me using them,” he says. “But they’re also my go-to for the gym, so I’d probably cease to function without them.”

Okayden’s favourite track to date is Melancholy, one of the first songs he ever made. “It doesn’t even sound like one of my songs,” he says, “but I can still distinctly remember where I was and how I felt when I made it. It takes me back every time.”

The mix featured a preview from his Okayden remix album, and closed with a Polybit remix of Sugar Water- a track yet to be released, but like Okayden himself, definitely worth keeping an eye on.

The Aussential Mix with Okayden aired on Red Rebel FM on Friday 20 June, and on 2xxfm on Wednesday 25 June as part of EMA’s monthly showcase of standout Australian electronic artists.
